WASTEDLA: THE POP UP SHOP

The wastedLA Pop Up Shop came out of my broader wastedLA thesis project. It was designed as an envoy of a creative colony based in Los Angeles, CA. The Pop Up Shop travels the world creating site specific clothes from the waste available in each new area. For this particular installation of the shop there was a jacket made out of plastic take out bags, a vest made out contact lens packs, and a pair of pants made of scrap fabric. I built 12 wooden frames to act as the structure of the walls and then covered the exterior of the shop with paper waste salvaged from the school of architecture dumpsters. The front of the shop was plastered with my own drawings saved from throughout the school year. Inside the shop, the back wall was covered with mattress fabric, taken off mattresses found abandoned roadside throughout Los Angeles. Against the wall of mattresses was a TV showing marketing material for the larger thesis as a whole; mimicking sensational media tactics used to today, but instead to bring awareness to the waste endemic to our culture rather than promoting wasteful consumer practices.
